MATCH RESULT – LYDNEY SENIORS V FOREST HILLS SENIORS (AWAY) TUESDAY 5TH JUNE 2018.
Lydney Seniors were excellent hosts for their friendly rivals from the Forest. Fantastic work had been done to combat the greenhouse growing conditions occurring on every golf course this year. The greens were true although their pace was not as fast as the away team might have normally suffered. As the sun began to set the banter in the bar, on the patio and at the meal table proved once again that Senior Golf Matches are always a winner. The food was special – the cheese board making the icing on top of the cake. HUGE THANKS LYDNEY!!!!!
Captain Mike Steward and, newcomer to Senior Golf matches, Chris Hardy led the way for the visitors and were soon 1 down. The Match was on! Mike and Chris dovetailed well and were 3 up at the turn. At the end of the 13th they were only 1 up. A crucial winning putt for par on the 14th by Mike regained a 2 hole lead that Chris capitalised on with a par on the 16th to WIN 4 and 2.
Former Captain John Humphries and Bill Peffers off the 6th came out firing on all cylinders and were two up in 2 BUT all square at the turn. Nip and tuck against a team that never gave up. The inform Forest pairing then parred 4 holes that took the wind out of the sails of the Lydney boys. WIN 4 and 2.
Unfortunately Pete Dovey and Jim Fairweather could not get close to their opposition no matter how they tried and try they did. The Lydney team used their course knowledge and shots to perfection. LOSS 5 / 3. Forest Hills looking forward to the home match!!!
A 4 / 3 LOSS to some looks bad. Chris Dovey and Mike Connon had a great game but a ‘new‘, away, course and, giving shots, proved to be a real struggle. Chris managed a few wins and halves to contain the opposition but dyslexia on the greens from Mike did not help their quest. Forest Hills left the 18th big smiles and handshakes. The better team had won.
The two Mikes probably laughed more than they played golf. Mike Nicholas and Mike Stratford [welcome to Senior Golf Matches 2018] thoroughly enjoyed their game even though they never could match the quality golf or banter from their opposition. Mikes buggy was overtaken by a snail on numerous occasions. LOSS 4 & 3.
Paul Taylor and Bob Gibson had a one man opposition. [The funeral of a former prominent member of the club and Seniors Section was happening whilst we played. It was a difficult decision by the Lydney Committee to ensure that the match took place as so many wanted to pay their respects. Forest Hills Seniors send their sympathy and best wishes]. In match play to stay as close as he did says a lot about his skills and course knowledge. WIN 3 & 2.
ALL SQUARE! ONE MORE TEAM MATCH TO ENTER THE FRAY.
Stalwart Senior STEVE KEEPAX and very late recruitment DAVE ‘MOUSE’ HOWARD had a cracking game. Dave was giving shots right, left and centre against an opposition that had a newbie to Senior Matches. Much banter, great golf from both teams, but better scrambling from Forest Hills allowed a 3 & 2 WIN.
OVERALL RESULT :
WINNERS SENIOR GOLF AND just FOREST HILLS.
