MATCH REPORT – THURSDAY 24/5/18, TREDEGAR PARK v FOREST HILLS, AWAY.
Yet another new venue for the Seniors from Forest Hills. What a right Royal Welsh welcome we received. Whilst a few of us had played the course before many hadn’t. No matter what, our guests helped us round a course that needed careful plotting to ensure success. Rain threatened from the moment we left the Forest but whilst we received a minor splash we all finished dry. The greens had been sanded and fertilized but this did not deter either side and pars and birdies were recorded all over the course. The banter on and off the course coupled with the excellent food served in special surroundings made this yet another win, win, win, for Senior Golf Matchplay Friendlies.
The Captain Mike Steward with Roger Preece led the away side off the first. Mike came out of the stalls firing on all cylinders 3 up after 3 [two birdies and a par with a shot!]. It couldn’t last. Tredegar Park fought back to be one down at the turn. All square on the 12th so Roger nailed a par to take us into a 1 shot lead. The next 4 holes were holed by some ‘nervous 4 footers’ by Roger. 17th Stroke index 2 Mike and their Captain had a shot. Mike secured a 5/4 to WIN 2&1.
Class will tell. Ian Smart andJim Fairweatherwere 2 down at the turn even with Jim chipping in for a birdie 3 on the way. 1 down by the end of the 16th still neck and neck. Even though Ian was giving away shots he managed to win the next 2 holes to take the Forest Hills Pairing to a 1 UP WIN.
Martin McNeill and Trevor Hallett came up against stiff opposition that new the slopes and nuances of their own course. Trevor, back from his holidays, suffered under the cooler temperatures but battled well. He and Martin never let the home team get away but could not quite get ahead and LOST 1 DOWN.They want a rematch.
4 down after 5 on a course that you are not familiar with did not bode well for Mike Nicholas and Robin Leamon. But this was a determined Forest Hills pairing that would never give up. Gradually together they clawed back hole after hole. A HALFaway from home. Great Result!
Bill Peffers and Paul Adamsfound themselves some very stiff opposition even though they were given shots to play with. How do you follow – BIRDIE, BIRDIE, BIRDIE, NETT BIRDIE ? 3 down after 9. Paul began the fight back with some great golf. All square with 3 holes to go. A fantastic recovery and a half might have been a fair result but home advantage took its toll and a half on the 18th meant that Forest Hills LOST 1 DOWN.
BOB GIBSON playing with a new handicap that was 3 shots less than 16 was going to find this course exacting. COLIN GRINDLE,drafted in as his playing partner, new the course fairly well, but also had to play well too. The opposition wrote this comment at the end of their match….’Do believe me they played exceptionally well’! Whoever cut Bob did a good job but not good enough!’ Both pairings enjoyed the course and contest – Forest Hills WIN 2 UP.
STEVE KEEPAX and COLIN BAIRD had a very close match until the turn. The Forest Hills pairing playing on a new course found the going tough and with few shots for the away side they could not overcome the strong opposition. LOSS 4 and 3.
3 1/2 V 3 1/2a finely balanced match. Captain Mike can take no credit for the next pairing of DAVE SHUTTLEWORTH and ROGER OVETT. If ever a pair can dovetail these two can and did. They were 4 up early on knocking the wind from the sails of the home team. Tredegar came back as the light rain fell but not quite enough. Well done ‘tail end Charlie’s’. WIN 3 & 1.
A great Result Team FOREST HILLS…… WIN 4 1/2…….3 1/2 awayfrom home. But the real winner as always was Senior Golf and the new friends we have found at Tredegar Park.
