MATCH REPORT: FOREST HILLS V COTSWOLD EDGE THURSDAY 17th May 2018.
Today’s friendly match was a template for Senior Golf! This was the first of, what we BOTH hope will be, many enjoyable clashes together. Who won? SENIORS GOLF!
This was the first fixture between the two teams that live on opposite sides of the Severn. Friends were made as soon as the first visitor arrived in the bar at Forest Hills. That camaraderie continued throughout every game and flowed into and through the badinage that accompanied another splendid après golf meal. Thank you Cotswold Edge. Thank you the weather – sun on our old backs always helps. Thank you Paul Gibson and his crew for such a difficult course! [Is ‘thank you’ the right phrase?] Chris etc in the kitchen – awesome!
The Captain sent MIKE NICHOLAS and TERRY HOOK out first as path finders/trail blazers. They were 5 up after 6 holes- a massive act to follow. Home advantage was telling as the speed of the greens and the subtle slopes took their toll on players unused to the course. Mike was on fire and try, as the opposition certainly did, they could not put him out. They do want a rematch on their course! WIN 6 & 5.
IAN SMART and MARTIN MCNEILL, often misnamed as the formidable team, were really pushed from the start from the superb pairing from Cotswold Edge. The visitors were 2 over gross at the turn having had a three hole win advantage. The Forest Hills pair had to work hard and play hard and did by taking a one hole lead on the 13th. Nip and Tuck joined in the game and it took a par on the 18th by Forest Hills to win the match 1 UP.
The Captains joined the fray. Someone must have upset COLIN WHITE. He came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders steady, straight and true time and time again. 3 up after 3. Captain Mike Steward pushed his trolley really well! Colin never let up all the way round. Quality shots came from the opposition as they read the slopes well and the greens even better. The match did get closer at times but Colin was relentless. Mike was allowed to help now and again but was rarely needed. Who said 28 HCPs were never good enough to play in friendly matches? WIN 4 & 3.
Another 28 HCP JOHN BODNAR played in the 4th match with PAUL ADAMS. Awesome drives from John all day and sensible use of his shots blended so well with the careful plotting of the course that is Pauls signature Forest Hills golf. The opposition might have been slightly punch drunk 5 down after 6. But the story will be different when we play away. The Cotswold Edge pairing kept fighting a course they had never seen before. The initial lead was too much for them. WIN 5&4.
ROGER PREECE and BILL PEFFERS thoroughly enjoyed their game not because they were 2 up after 2 but because the Cotswold Edge pairing never let them get away. Nip and Tuck, wins, halves and losses finally, after much laughter and better still quality golf, brought WIN 2 & 1.
If a Captain ever needed a ‘steady Eddy’ to play last in his team he would pick BOBGIBSON. If a Captain could pair him with a player who has played well out of a miserable winter and has kept that improvement going he would pair him with DAVE SHUTTLEWORTH. I thought Cotswold Edge would be up against it with this pairing away from home. WIN 2 &1. Well played Cotswold Edge away from home against this pairing!
SO WHO WON TODAY? FOREST HILLS 6- 0. SO WHAT?
