Match Report : Forest Hills Seniors v Leominster Seniors at home Thursday 12th April.
Ominous fog invaded the course and obliterated anything over 100 yards from the club house viewpoint. Would Captain ‘JONAH’ Mike Steward have to cancel yet another match? He tried but LEOMINSTER had already left. He was left to hope and pray that the fog would lift. By 10.30 it had cleared enough and the match could go ahead.
With the FOG sign barely visible Bob Gibson and Peter Dovey launched their drives to start their match. Bob played very well and enabled the Forest Hills pairing to lead by 4 holes. But the Leominster pairing fought with great tenacity and skill and reduced the lead to a nip and tuck game until Forest Hills finally won 2 & 1.
Roger Ovett and Colin Baird drove off as the second home pairing. Colin was striking the ball well and straight from the outset and gelled so well with Roger that the home team were 5 up at the halfway stage. We know that Leominster never give up but today the home pairings game was so strong that Forest Hills won 7 & 5.
Captain Mike Steward had chosen IAN SMART to carry him round for this match. Ian was a juggernaut. Mike halved one hole and won one. IAN DID THE REST! However their opposition ensured that this was a very close game until Ian sealed a 3 & 2 win on the 16th with a canny par. Consequently with the match over Captain Mike birdied the 17th!
If the handicap system is right then perhaps only ‘home advantage‘ is a possible benefit. Paul Adams and Dave Shuttleworth although having plenty of shots were up against a single figure Senior golfer from Leominster who played out of his skin. All four players left the 18th with massive smiles. They had all beaten the course in a very closely contested match with Forest Hills just squeezing out a victory 1 UP.
The Seniors from LEOMINSTER never give up! Forest Hills were 2 up at the turn but MIKE CONNON and GRAHAM WALLACE knew this lead was not enough. Leominster were 1 up by the end of the 13th. Pace and accuracy on the putting was going to win this game. Forest Hills 1 UP on the 18th = a GREAT GAME OF MATCHPLAYGOLF.
Martin McNeill may well have felt a bit down going into this match. However the fog was lifting and his playing partner Colin Grindle was on good form. With both home players gelling well, no matter what Leominster threw at them, Martin and Colin eased ahead and kept ahead. Martin now has a win under his belt. 5&4 WIN.
11.50 and the fog finally lifted! With handicaps of 13 and above it is rare to see pars winning the holes. No matter what quality of golf MIKE NICHOLAS and PHIL GWYNNE threw at the opposition they matched it. However, after a very close match a possible draw on the 18th turned into a 2 DOWN LOSS for the home team.
6 – 1 VICTORY FOR FOREST HILLS. 100% VICTORY FOR FRIENDSHIP, QUALITY COURSE IN THESE CONDITIONS, COMFORT FOOD TO DIE FOR AND BANTER.
Mike Steward – Seniors Captain.
