Match Report : Forest Hills Seniors v Thornbury Seniors at home Monday 16th April.

The sun shone on the two teams from the outset but did not last as long as each side wanted. The course dried out as the match unfolded and whilst there was still little run on the ball the putting surfaces were true and relatively fast. So both teams enjoyed the days golf, the chat and badinage and the special comfort food that Forest Hills kitchen provides.

Vice Captain Paul Taylor and Colin Grindle led the home team off the first tee. Thornbury came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and were quickly 3 up after 3. The Forest Hills pair finally shook the sleep from their eyes and made it all square at the end of the 10th. Gelling well together they overtook their opposition using the drying conditions, solid ball striking and true putting to WIN 4 and 3. A great come back – well done!

Roger Ovett and Peter Dovey drove off as the second home pairing and found themselves all square after 9 holes. The Thornbury putters  began to melt having been so hot! Relentless pressure from the home team secured a rightful victory 4 and 2. Great team work!

Captain Mike Steward appears to know how to pick his playing partner. Steve Keepaxwas awesome and he needed to be. Forest Hills were 2 down at the turn but 1 down  by the end of the 14th. Mike, at last, sunk a 7 foot putt on the 15th to keep the home team 1 down. He then parred the 16th with a shot  –  all square! He then went back to sleep as Steve birdied the 17th [with a shot!!!!] and halved the 18th to secure the WIN 1 UP. Sublime play Steve – Thank You!

4 up and 5 to play ..it’s all over.. was that what Terry Hook and Dave Shuttleworthwere thinking? They had to think again very quickly – that is how good their opposition were. 1 up and 2 to play. Back in the grove – quite rightly – the Forest Hills pair secured a 2 and 1 WIN. Phew!!! Well done!

It is a massive ask for a team to come back from 6 up after 6. Phil Gwynne and Martin McNeill had the bit between their teeth they were on form and ahead! Thornbury never gave up and tried their utmost to fight back but positive iron work and great putting led the home team to a justifiable 5 and 4 victory.

Home advantage usually wins on the greens at Forest Hills. Bob Gibson and Mike Nicholas quickly realised that their opponents knew what approach shots to make and what strength and direction their puts should travel. Try as they might they could not catch them and their single putts. Loss 4 and 2.

Last but never least Pete Chisholm and Mike Connon were the 7th Forest Hills pairing. Off the tee and most second shots saw this game as an ‘equal’. However, the quality of the chipping and the putting from this last pairing was spot on. Forest Hills win 5 and 3.Well done team 7.

Remember The Pig!!!????

Huge thanks Thornbury Seniors for a great days competition and camaraderie.

6 – 1 VICTORY FOR FOREST HILLS. BUT AN EVEN BIGGER VICTORY FOR SENIOR GOLF.

HUGE THANKS TEAM FOREST HILLS.

Mike Steward – Seniors Captain.
